What causes depression?   It's usually caused by some type of stress, and one of the largest types of stress is allergy/sensitivity.  Mostly unknown to the person afflicted. All stress is additive, and if this type of stress is present, the person may not be able to handle everyday stress well, and become depressed.

There are hundreds of symptoms that may be a part of individual depression.  Anxiety or PTSD are both forms of depression.

Both Neurofeedback (NFB) and Neuroliminal Training (NT)relieve the "brain allergies" that are the major problem, thus allowing the brain to handle the day-to-day stress.

The truth is that any EEG biofeedbackNeurofeedback (EEGBF/NFB) unit on the market today that can train to raise the SMR brainwave can solve most, depression problems.   This "training of the brain" works for virtually all "brain"problems" including ADD/ADHD, Autism, Anxiety, OCD, Epilepsy, and even many schizophrenias.

In the past treatment of depression was done by many different types of talk therapy by psychologists.   There are over 250 psychotherapy "techniques", and NONE of them have been proven to work any better than any other.

Especially with depression.   The APA has neatly classified several different types of depression (manic, bipolar, unipolar, post-partum, grief, PTSD, etc - mostly for the purposes of legally making them covered by health insurance.)  But, the fact remains that very few depressed patients were ever "cured" by talk type psychotherapy.   As a matter of fact, it has been shown in several studies that talking to a sympathetic friend, even a bartender, or almost anyone who will listen is about as good as talking to a clinician (at $100 up per hour).

Psychiatrists would seem to have somewhat of an advantage here.   They have the battery of drugs that "seem" to help depressed persons at least get thru life without too many suicides from depression.

Here's another truth.  Nobody ever got depressed because of poor toilet training as a child.   Freud had a lot of good ideas, but this wasn't one of them.   There's been a lot written about stress causing depression, and stress is a component (as poor toilet training may be).    But, it doesn't CAUSE depression directly.   So, just what does cause depression?

The Orthomolecular theory and my experience in practice (prior to retiring many years ago) taught me that there were three basic causes of depression.   Clearing up these "stresses" cleared up the patient's ability to withstand the normal stress of everyday living as well as the heavy stresses put on some at times. 

These three basic causes are:

  • Mineral Toxicity (perhaps 10-15%)
  • Nutritional Deficiency (perhaps 15-20%

  • Allergies and Other Stress Factors (perhaps 75-85%)

The following is pretty brief, and my book "The Health Revolution" has much more information and actual case studies of many different types of depression and anxiety, etc.   It also describes the actual therapy I used in each case, and how it worked.

Mineral Toxicity

There are several minerals that may cause depression (at toxic levels) directly.   These include toxic levels of mercury, copper, lead, and others.   (In the case of copper, medium toxic levels of copper can cause depression, and higher levels may cause schizophrenia.)  Lead is still a problem, but becoming less likely due to removing it from gasoline and paint.   I even had one patient with arsenic causing depression.

Nutritional Deficiency

As mentioned above, almost every kind of stress causes the body to use up various vitamins and minerals faster.   This means that when you are under unusual stress, you should be taking more vitamins.   (Some health food stores even sell so-called "stress vitamins", which are merely a B complex, and vitamin C pills.)

Allergy/Sensitivity

Now we come to the real meat.   Allergy!  Since this is the major cause of deression (and stress), this seems to be why Neuroliminal Training (or EEG Biofeedback/Neurofeedback) works so well for so many cases!

To be more precisely, both allergy and/or food/chemical sensitivities.   To allergists, they are two separate problems, and until recently, few MD allergists even considered food sensitivity at all.   Both allergy and sensitivity can cause all the same symptoms/disease as the other.  Ranging from schizoprenia and depression to hyperactivity and bedwetting, arthritis and skin itching.   The list of potential symptoms of allergy and/or sensitivity is as long as your arm.   It surprises many people that most of the "brain problems" of depression, ADD/ADHD, schizophremia, epilepsy, etc can be, and are caused by either.

Talk about stress.   Both allergy and/or sensitivity cause huge stress to the body, and stress is additive.   So, if you have an emotional strain in your life at the same time as an allergen is affecting you, the overall stress becomes much more, and your body needs much more in the way of good nutrition to help get thru this stressful period.    Post Partum Depression and PMS are examples of additive stress.

In virtually every depressed patient I ever saw in my practice the depression "lifted" when the combination of stress from allergy and/or mineral toxicity was dealt with.   (I estimate about 80% allergy/sensitivity and 20% mineral toxicity with a lot of overlap.)  By curing the underlying physical problem, the "ordinary" stress of modern life can be dealt with.

I should mention at this point that whenever I saw a depression patient for the first time, I immediately started them on a combination of 500 mg of Tryptophan, and 500 mg of Tyrosine - from 1-3 times per day along with at least 50 mg B complex at the same time.   None of these cause any side effects (unless you are allergic to capsules or some of the "fillers" used.   This helped to lift their depression during the search for the underlying problem, and helped defuse thoughts about suicide.

That was in my practice back in the 80/90's.   In April 2002, I leased two EEG biofeedback units to two different people that have reported back.   One, was a suicidally depressed young man.   With 40 1/2 hour sessions, he has completely turned around, and is quite normal (whatever that is).   No depression symptoms at all.   The other was an older woman, and she reported that after training her son (ADD/ADHD), she felt much better just watching him train, so she did sessions herself.   She didn't report how many, but not only was her son free of his ADD/ADHD symptoms, but her depression was gone as well.   (Since that was written, many more cases have been successful, both with leased/sold EEGBF/NFB units, and with the my new Neuroliminal Training system.)

How does it work?  Nobody really knows at this point, but my theory is that this training somehow trains the brain to re-examine allergens and their effect on the brain.   (I don't know how hypnosis works either, but I've used it with many successes for over 50 years - and for that matter, we still don't know how electrons travel over a wire to light a bulb.    But, we do know to use all these.

The following list is provided to make it easier to know if you or someone you love is suffering from depression:
  • Emotional reactions:   This is the easiest one in that you feel depressed most of the day.   This is a no brainer, especially if you feel this way nearly every day, or feel sad or empty or others tell you that this you do.

    Symptoms:  Feel sad, feels empty or lacks feelings of all kinds, tired ("everything is an effort")... nervous or restless, angry and grouchy (especially in kids), irritable, overreacts to criticism... bored, apathetic, "nothing is enjoyable," feels socially abandoned and/or has less interest in relationships, sex, food, drink, music, current events.

  • Physical changes:  . Fatigue or loss of energy nearly every day is probably the most common symptom in depression. It is one of the most common symptoms that I saw in my practice.   There are many reasons that you could be fatigued other than depression, but most depressed people have fatigue as part of their illness.

    The second most important symptom is early morning awakening.   If you are waking up at 2 to 4 AM on a regular basis one of your first thoughts should be to consider the possibility that you are depressed.   Most people with depression feel extremely tired with insomnia or have hypersomnia nearly every day.

    One also needs to be alert to weight issues, either gaining or losing weight.   The part of the brain that controls appetite is almost invariably affected.   If you have a significant weight loss when not dieting or your appetite is decreased, or if you have an increased appetite and have a significant weight gain, you should consider the possibility of depression.

    Symptoms:   -- difficulty sleeping or sleeping excessively, awaking early... hyperactivity or sluggishness, diurnal moods (worse in the morning)... low sex drive, loss of appetite, weight loss or gain, indigestion, constipation, headaches, dizziness, pain, and other somatic problems or complaints.

    • Attitudes and motivation:  . A depressed mood is a major change from your normal mood. Typically relationships with your friends, family, job or school take a significant impact by the change in your mood.   A markedly decreased interest in all, or almost all, your activities most of the day, nearly every day is a strong indicator of depression.   It is as if there is nothing in life gives you any pleasure anymore.

      Symptoms:   low self-concept, lack of self-confidence and motivation, pessimistic or hopeless, feel helpless or like a failure, expects the worst... self-critical, guilt, self-blaming, "People would hate me if they really knew me"... suicidal thoughts, "I wish I had never been born."

    • Behavioral excesses:  . Some experts believe that you can't be depressed unless you have thoughts of wanting to take your life.  You may or may not have a specific plan for committing suicide but you feel that it would just be better for all involved, especially yourself, if you just weren't here anymore.

      Symptoms:   -- complaints about money, job, housing, noise, poor memory, confusion, loneliness, lack of care and love... acting out (adolescents), running away from home, rebellious, aggressive... obsessed with guilt and concern about doing wrong, about being irresponsible, about the welfare of others, and about "I can't make up my mind anymore"... crying... suicidal threats or attempts.

    • Behavioral deficits:  . You lose the enthusiasm to be with people and talk with family and friends.  Depression is one of the more common reasons for sexual dysfunction.

      Symptoms:   -- socially withdrawn, doesn't talk, indecisive, can't work regularly, difficulty communicating, slower speech and gait... loss of appetite, weight change, stays in bed... less sexual activity, poor personal grooming, and doing less for fun.

    • Lack of skills:   Another very common pattern is a significant negative change in your thought processes.  If you have feelings of worthlessness or excessive or inappropriate guilt nearly every day or have a diminished ability to think or concentrate, or indecisiveness, nearly every day, then your body may be giving you a huge clue that you may be depressed.

    • Symptoms:   -- poor social skills, frequently whiny or boring, critical, lack of humor... indecisive, poor planning for future and unable to see "solutions."
