This is a technique of teaching a relaxation "response" using a hypnotic induction. It differs from hypnosis in that it is used to start a response instead of using hypnosis directly. It is related to Pavlov's conditioned response techniques. It increases in effectiveness as it is used, and the response becomes more positive with use. It is also used for starting self-hypnosis. Of course, it is completely safe in every way, and can be done by virtually anybody.
In the past few years, Dr Bate has found that using the Bate Relaxation Technique along with the Bate Neuroliminal Training can be considerably more effective for almost any "brain problem". In addition, the Bate Relaxation Technique has a "deepening" addition for much better self hypnosis. This Relaxation Technique is included on the DATA disk accompanyhing all of the NT CD packages.
You may also be able to do it yourself free. The script below is designed for asthma, and is not critical. It has been tried over many years, and if used correctly, it should do the job well. Use a monotone voice without much inflection at all. Speak slowly and distinctly. There's no hurry. Be sure that the subject is able to relax well - no tight clothing, reclining or lying in a comfortable chair or bed. No bright lights or loud noises to disturb the concentration of the subject. The object is to first get the subject very relaxed, then to concentrate the mind with a visualization technique. At that point, the subject is asked to memorize those feelings of physical relaxation and mental concentration, and to tie these feelings to a trigger of counting to three. This teaches the relaxation response.
By use of this several times a day for a few days, this response will become "set" and easily used for various things, including self-hypnosis, and most particularly relief of children's asthma symptoms.
Please note that hypnosis has been known to "cure" allergies, but it is a moot point whether the allergy is cured, or just the symptom associated with that allergy is removed. Also remember that every individual reacts differently to everything in life. This technique works very well for virtually all children between the ages of 6 and 15 or so, and has "cured" every one that I saw in my practice. It should work for anyone, but I cannot guarantee this.
I suggest that you print out the script below, and read it. Put it into your own words if you wish. There's nothing sacred about it. The only problem I've had over many years is that too many people can't believe that something so simple can be as effective as this is, and their "disbelief" in effect neutralizes the desired results. It is simple, but it is also very powerful as the mind can do amazing things.
Now, take another deep breath, and as you let it out, feel yourself relax more and more. Concentrate on your leg and thigh muscles just as you did your feet and toes. Try to get all those muscles as relaxed as you possibly can. Let that pleasant heavy kind of tingly feeling move thru all those muscles as they relax completely.
Another deep breath, and feel yourself relaxing even more as you let it out. Concentrate on the major muscles in your body, your chest, back and stomach. Feel that heaviness of relaxation increase as those muscles completely relax. All the little muscles up and down your spine. Let the feelings of relaxation increase. Now, the muscles are feeling much more relaxed and heavy.
Now, concentrate on the muscles in your shoulders and arms, right down to your fingertips. Feel all those muscles get heavier and a bit tingly as they relax all the way.
Now, the back of the neck, and the scalp, and around to the facial muscles. Let your mouth fall open in complete relaxation. Feeling very relaxed and comfortable and good.
Now, I want you to imagine yourself in a scene that I describe. Try to put yourself into the scene as completely as you can. Visualize it in your mind, and try to feel it as I describe it. You are lying on a damp towel on nice soft sand on a beautiful beach. It is a lovely day, deep blue summer sky with puffy white clouds, and a gentle breeze that is cool over your body. The sun is warm, but with the breeze and the damp towel, you are perfectly comfortable. You are alone in this area, although there are people further down the beach playing and swimming. The waves are gentle as they break on the beach in semicircles, chasing some small birds up and down as the look for food in the surf. They make little piping noises that combine with the distant sounds of people, and the sound of the breeze in the trees behind the beach to make a very pleasant sound overall. As you lie there completely at ease, idly watching the puffy white clouds as they slowly move across the blue sky, you can play the childhood game of finding familiar shapes in them. It's so pleasant just lying watching the float gently along. As they float, let yourself go and you can feel like you're floating along with the clouds, feeling very light and lazy.
Right now, memorize the feelings in your mind and body. The feeling of complete relaxation in your body, and the feeling of concentration in your mind. Put these feelings into your memory like a photograph, and recall this memory any time you count to three. You can count in your head, or out loud, and you will instantly feel those feelings of relaxation and concentration come over you like a blanket of calm. As you practice this technique simply by counting to three several times a day, you increase the effect of this relaxation, until you will find that you can relax any time and any place you want by just counting to three. If you are under tension, you'll feel it drain away as you count.
Now, I want you to remember the worst asthma attack you have ever had, and I want you to imagine it happening again. Try to get the same feelings of throat tightening, the struggle for breath, the bad feelings that came with all that. Imagine it again, and experience it again. Try real hard to get it back along with all your fears and problem with it. Now, as you are experiencing it again, and you are starting to really feel it again, count to three. There, see how your throat relaxed, and your body relaxed, and the attack which was so bad for you went away immediately. From now on, whenever you have any start of an asthma attack, just count to three, and you will feel it disappear again, and you will be able to breathe easily as you relax.
If you are not asthmatic, but simply want to learn the technique, use the following at the above point:
Now, I'm going to count backwards from three to one. When I get to one, you will be completely awake, still relaxed, but feeling very good, better than ever. You won't be sleepy at all, and not affected by my voice at all, just feeling very good. Three - Two - One. Wide awake and feeling good.
Now, because you are too relaxed, I want you to stand up. OK, now that you are up, take a deep breath, hold it a few seconds, then count to three as you exhale.
Feel that rather strange feeling come over you? When you stood up, you tensed the muscles that you you often tense when under strain of any kind. When you counted to three, you relaxed and that strange feeling of almost melting was caused by the relaxing of those muscles. Practice this technique by counting to three several time a day for a week or more, and you'll have a technique you can use all your life.
Relaxation, and even more, the easing of tension of everyday living is very important to everyone's health. This technique is much more useful than most people even begin to conceive of. Use it often, and experiment with it, and you will find it one of the most important things you have ever learned.
