Actual case study with daily diary of (M) as related by his mother in emails

The original data sheet showed as follows:

10 Years Old
Brain Problems of each: ADHD, Auditory Processing<
Known allergies of each: Egg, pollen, dust mites<
> Drugs and dosages of each: Concerta 36mg, Strattera 40mg, Singulair 5mg, Flonase (nasal) 100mcg, multivitamin, fish oil, Epsom salt baths<
> Behavior problems: Impulsivity, hyperactive, inattention, lack of self-control, defiant, moodiness, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, anger, inability to shift activities or transition

Below is the "saga". It shows clearly as very analogous to the similar progress made by trainees on EEG BF equipment. While each child is individual and somewhat different, this particular case history is pretty typical of the back and forth as the trainee gradually trains his/her brain by use of the auditory training. Note also, that while (M) was pretty well over all ADHD symptoms at 60 days, he continued to improve by using the auditory CD. This indicates (to me at least) that continued "brain training" may be more useful that has been thought in "conventional EEG BF". Since the expense of EEG BF is so high, this is an added advantage to auditory training. Using the auditory costs virtually nothing after the initial cost.

Something else important is demonstrated here. Neither Auditory Brain Wave Training nor EEG BF/NFB are magic pills! It takes time to change the brain. A minimum of 60 days is suggested by many EEG BF clinicians, but the cost is so high that (IMO) many clients may cut this short. Many people in our tests report continuing improvement well after 60 days. It costs nothing extra to keep using Auditory Training for as long as there is improvement!

11/16 Thank you for the feedback on (M)'s progress. He is very receptive to the idea of helping himself - he wants to "get better" and improve his behavior. There have been a couple of days where we did not give the concerta because of the lateness of taking morning meds... It has a 10-12 hr dosing and if not given early in am he will be up very late at night - he always takes stratera. You may reprint the emails to help others.... Is there anything else in the summary's that would be helpful? I tend to list the "big" things during the day that stand out... And then occasionally (M) comments.

Day 24 11/30/05 Listened to loop all night – extremely distracted today by everything – started Math very late in the am – finished Math with my supervision – could not (or would not) work on Language Arts – finally sent to room to work on LA at 2 pm – still not done at 4pm – did not earn privilege time - great night at gymnastics

Day 25 12/1/05 Listened to loop all night – woke up very late in the am, but in good spirits – did not get any schoolwork done in am – had fun at chess club – music lessons were canceled – Let him get his Pizza Hut Pizza (Book It Award) if he promised to work hard in the afternoon and get his schoolwork completed – argued about having to work on social studies project and not being able to play with friend – ended up finishing most of work after redirection many times and constant supervision – no privileges

Day 26 12/2/05 Listened to loop all night – lots of annoying behaviors in am – whistling, running & dancing around, playing with meds – extremely distracted – finished only half of schoolwork – no privileges - good night at gym, but one of the older team members slapped and pushed him into the foam pit (he has previously had fights with this boy, he is the gym owners son and is very mean spirited and picks on the younger boys, we have conferenced with these parents two times in the past) – called me upset and wanted to be picked up

Day 27 12/3/05 Listened to loop all night – had to be told many times to do different tasks to get them completed in early am – good morning in choir, but nervous about 1st concert this afternoon – did not eat a good lunch - did well in concert, excited about performance – treated him to lunch at the mall – completed most of tasks on checklist – earned privileges

Day 28 12/4/05 Listened to loop all night - excessive talking in am – completed everything on checklist – played with friend – earned privileges – went 18 minutes over on privileges and I warned and then turned off the Xbox – he cried and was angry, but got over it very quickly – within 2 minutes he stopped crying and went to take his shower – just amazing considering the tantrums he used to throw, even his dad commented on how much better he took it compared to the past – came out of shower in good mood and completed night time routine

On 12/1, I received following:

Hi Dr Bate - sorry for the length of this message, but there are a few new pieces of information that you may find interesting.... You are welcome to share this with the group.

We have an appointment scheduled on 12/13 with our Developmental Pediatrician who specializes in ADHD at our major hospital. (M) saw this Dr 2 ½ years ago and his meds are managed by our regular pediatrician. We originally made the appointment 3 months ago because after increasing (M)'s meds there was no improvement in (M)'s behavior. However, we are now planning to discuss NF, auditory Training, and gradually reducing (M)'s meds. With (M) being homeschooled, we will be able to monitor his progress closely as we reduce his medications.

Another interesting piece of information concerns (M)'s participation in gymnastics. He has always had great difficulty with following directions, staying on task, and getting along with his team mates. He has been in both verbal and physical fights with his teammates. (M) often tells us that he wants to quit the team because no one likes him and they pick on him. We have left him on to the team because (M) needs to learn how to get along with other boys and has great potential when he works hard.

Since we have started the auditory training, I'm sure you have noted that (M) has only excellent nights/afternoons at the gym. Instead of thumbs down or a so-so he has been receiving thumbs up. What is more encouraging is that (M) is starting to make friends with the other boys and is looking forward to his first meet of the season in two weeks. (M)'s coach is very pleased with his latest progress and new dedication at the gym.

Day 29 12/5/05 Listened to loop all night – running and jumping around in early am – good start to school work, but was very frustrated and argued about writing assignments – finished all schoolwork – earned privilege time – did not want to go to the gym – very negative - told me the truth about pushing the boy at the gym first – had him apologize to this boy for this behavior – boys talked it out – (M)'s mood immediately changed - he became happy and very positive, good night at gymnastics, but younger boy was picking on him and he called this boy a curse word, so lost privilege time for the following day

Day 30 12/6/05 Listened to loop all night – finished most of schoolwork – argued about writing assignments - good night at gymnastics

Day 31 12/7/05 Listened to loop all night – finished most schoolwork – did not earn privilege time - great night at gymnastics – told me that he has made friends with a couple more boys at the gym – is very excited about the gym Christmas party next Saturday - stayed up too late in the evening

Day 32 12/8/05 Listened to loop all night – slept in – did not get much of Math done before Chess club and Flute lessons – finished Math in car – took all afternoon and into the evening to finish schoolwork and checklist – family came over for dinner and he was very distracted and just goofy – did not earn privileges - was upset that we would not let him watch survivor - tried sneaking candy up to room – stayed up late reading and singing and talking to himself in room

Day 33 12/9/05 Listened to loop all night – finished all schoolwork and everything on checklist very late in the day (early evening) – did not earn privileges - had fun at craft class with a friend - stayed up too late in the evening – caught him eating candy in bed that was taken away the night before

Day 34 12/10/05 Listened to loop all night – sluggish in am – took Math/LA exam, was very nervous about this test, but he said he did the best he could – finished chores after being redirected many times – had fun at his choir concert – let him watch a couple of movies

Day 35 12/11/05 Listened to loop all night - while I was out Christmas shopping, his dad said he argued with him many times about completing his work and chores - finished everything on checklist late in the day and earned privileges

Day 36 12/12/05 Listened to loop all night – very unfocused day – did not do schoolwork unless I sat with him – refocused many times to the point that it was very annoying – only finished Math and some of LA – very anxious about Christmas – was fixated on his wish list - so/so night at the gym – very mouthy throughout the day – did not earn privileges – completed night time routine quickly

Day 37 12/13/05 Listened to loop all night – woke up very late – did not get started on school work until noon – has been very distracted all week by trucks digging and moving dirt to build a new house out our dining room window – I am chasing him back into the kitchen all day long – met with our ADHD Ped. today – ped was very positive about NF and a little cautious about auditory training – but said if it seemed to be working for us "great" and keep at it – was very positive about getting him off meds – said that is always his ultimate goal – gave us a referral to a local ped who does NF, hypnosis, natural treatments and is covered by our insurance – said we could stop the concerta without weaning, but Strattera will need to be weaned down – he advised that we stop the Concerta for 2 weeks, then put him back on for 2 weeks, then take him off again for 2 weeks and call him back with our comments about being off the med – after we do the Concerta trial we can then wean off Strattera – if we do not wean off Strattera he need to have a liver enzyme test done in the spring because he has been on the drug for a year –the ped. gave me more information about a very recent Omega 3 study that was published in October and said to have him continue taking the fish oil – overall, the ped was very positive about (M)'s recent progress and hoped that it continued – finished everything but music on his checklist – did not earn privileges - did a good job staying with me at toy store - night time routine went smoothly

Day 38 12/14/05 Listened to loop all night – woke up early and snuck downstairs and ate about 10 pieces of chocolate before meds and breakfast –the evidence was left on his face and t-shirt – denied eating it until I pointed out the evidence – took away today's privilege time – first day of no Concerta – very mad and grumpy – would not start Math – I put on Christmas music to lighten his mood and he started to sing and was much happier – I had him dance around to help get rid of his sugar high and then he began schoolwork – wandering around house, distracted and playing with anything he can get hands on – caught him with a box of candy mid-morning – extremely impulsive all day and unable to focus for more than a couple of minutes – did not finish checklist - terrible night at the gym, was sent out 3 times and after the 3rd time he told his coach that he did not want to work, he wanted to watch the movie in the waiting area – followed night time routine

Dr Bate note: Sounds to me like sugar intake is a major part of his hyperactivity.

Day 39 12/15/05 Listened to loop all night – initially did not give him Concerta with the rest of his meds – extremely distracted and impulsive – could not focus at all on Math – constantly up and wandering the house, playing with the animals and babies – gave him loop on MP3 player and had him listen to that to help him focus – still up wandering and running around - ended up giving him Concerta mid-morning, he is just not ready to be off meds – completed most of school work – had fun at chess and had a good but long music lesson

Day 40 12/16/05 Listened to loop all night – finished checklist – earned privileges – snuck his gameboy up to his room and told me the next day "I played until I fell asleep."

12/17/05 Day 41 Listened to loop all night – was caught with game boy in early am by dad – started Math – great practice at gym in am – gym Christmas party in afternoon – he only ate junk foods, no privileges at night because he snuck his gameboy the previous night and am – through a minor tantrum – on floor crying "I want my privileges" – we walked away and he was over it in about 5 minutes – night time routine went ok

Day 42 12/18/05 Listened to loop all night – got him up early for trip to Syracuse – first gymnastics meet of season – nervous, but very focused during event, made some minor mistakes – took corrections from coach - was All-Around Champion for his level and age group – placed 1st on 3 events and 2nd on 3 events – very proud of himself – only ate one piece of candy out of "goodie bag" – watched a movie – night time routine went well

Day 43 12/19/05 Listened to loop all night – took a long time to complete Math – only completed half of checklist – did not earn privileges - excellent night at gymnastics

Day 44 12/20/05 Listened to loop all night – very calm and focused – has cold symptoms - got started on school work early – finished checklist – played with friend and then went to religion class with him

email rcvd 12/21 - Hi - I agree that (M) is doing much better. He seems like a different boy to us - acting much more his age. He has always acted 2-3 years below his age. One other thing we have noticed over the years is that he seems to be worse for a couple of days during the month around the "new moon". It will be interesting to follow his behavior over the next few months.

Day 45 12/21/05 Listened to loop all night – spend much of early morning in his room – took math test but could not stay awake – no fever, nothing "hurt" - fell asleep on couch – had a mild anxiety attack around noon said he "did not want to be alone" – he did not know why he felt this way – mid afternoon he went to lay down in his bed – kept him home from the gym – extremely sleepy all day, could not stay awake – in the early evening dad found him playing gameboy in his room – he has had his gameboy for a couple of days/nights!! – he found the keys and snuck it out of the cabinet!! – well, no wonder why he was acting so strange today, he has not slept in two nights – had him finish his math and LA, then night time routine – apologized for not following the rules

email note to: Dr Bate – sorry for the incomplete journal – with the holiday and family visiting, I have forgotten to complete it – overall, (M)’s behavior has worsened this past week. This is probably due to him being mostly off schedule and all the new activities and distractions of family around the house.

Day 55 12/31/05 Listened to loop all night – completed checklist – upset that he was grounded from playing with his friend – found out some very bad news about a coach at his gym had been arrested - finished checklist – worked on his new puzzle for much of the afternoon and early evening – was upset about being grounded and not able to watch TV to see the “ball drop” at midnight. Put him to bed on time, but he refused to go to sleep – tried to open and possible climb out window to roof to see fireworks - was caught wandering the house around midnight – then finally went to bed.

Day 56 1/1/06 Listened to loop all night – very grumpy, upset about last night and anxious about meeting at the gym today concerning the coach. Sent him outside to throw snowballs to release anger – he was able to talk to me about his behavior, feelings, and our expectations after being outside for a while – finished checklist – let him have a new book to read

Email from mother - Now completed 60+ days, and discontinuing daily reports, but will still continue loop listening at night. Overall results very good. (See 12/21 email)

Final report - 2/27/06 Hi Dr Bate – sorry it has taken me a while to answer your email for a summary of (M)’s overall progress. My delay was because I wanted to start reducing (M)’s meds and then give a more informative update on his progress. Instead of following the dr’s original orders of stopping Concerta then tackling the Strattera, we finally convinced our ped. to allow us to do the Strattera withdrawal first – that being what we see the more dangerous medication.

(M) was taking 40 Mg of Strattera and I feel we have successfully cut his dose in half, down to the 25 mg dose with no behavioral changes after two weeks. We will cut the dose again to 18 mg next week – for two weeks, then proceed down to 10 mg for two weeks before final withdrawal from the drug. We are finally headed in the right direction!!

(M) continues to listen to his loop every night – I believe we are somewhere around 90 days with the program. After one night with the loop, his night time bed wetting stopped. During the day, he is much more aware of his bladder and will now always stop to use the bathroom. He never was aware and was always last minute dancing to the bathroom. He is much more compliant with his schoolwork, and very agreeable to getting his checklist done daily.

During his sports activities (gymnastics) he almost always gets a thumbs up after practice from his coach. He is enjoying practice and working on his routines and new skills. He is much more able to take feedback from his coach and has had a very successful season so far. (3 first place All-Around finishes, 1 second place All-Around Finish, and 1 seventh place finish at a very large meet in another state!!). He is looking forward to his last meet and states. He also gets along much better with his team mates and now has friends at the gym.

There are definitely still times where (M) is unfocused and needs reminders throughout the day. But, overall, we see a more normal 11 year old boy – one that is still full of energy, but usually it is controlled energy. There are plenty of behaviors we are working on, but his father and I believe they are more age related then part of his ADHD.

A little over 30 days ago my husband and I also began listening to the loop at night. My husband has stated that my snoring is much less – good for him!! I have noticed the same characteristic of my husband, much lighter snoring – great for me!! In addition, my husband’s allergies seem to be somewhat relieved. We have 3 cats and they have definitely been an aggravator for his allergies. He has always been hacking in the bathroom several times a day. Since we have started listening to the loop, my husband is rarely coughing and hacking!! He is truly amazed and can feel a difference with his respiratory issues.

We will keep you posted with our family’s progress of drug reductions and updates.

There are several lessons to be learned from this "saga".

  1. It takes time to change a brain. Do not become discouraged.
  2. It is often a three step forward and two back procedure.
  3. Keep on playing after the minimum 60 days as more improvement is probable.
  4. Do NOT just discontinue any drugs. The body gets used to such, and withdrawal can be a severe problem. Cut down gradually and watch for problems!
